Sculpture  Fine Art  Art as Activism

Scientist turned artist compelled to create by the suffering brought about through the decline of empathy, compassion, and the spiritual connection with nature. Pieces are designed to share knowledge, reveal inequities and injustice, and inspire commitment to creating a better world.

Bio

Luke Gumaelius, Ph.D. is a former scientist, builder, and lifelong artist. He has a long history of producing art that disrupts myopic belief systems and challenges people to face the harsh realities of life for most of our brothers and sisters on the planet. His years of research in molecular biology inform his work as an artist in how they represent the fundamental interconnectedness and mutual dependency of the larger world. Luke’s early work was in the form of murals, public art sculptures, and furniture as art. Current work is fine art with a social commentary and sculptures in dead fall wood and stainless steel that double as percussion instruments. Luke received a BA in Biology, MA in Entomology, and Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Purdue University.
